Episode 15: Greg Gets Grounded

Greetings once again dear readers!  Thank you for joining me to review “Greg Gets Grounded”.  The episode first aired on January 19th, 1973.  It is well remembered by fans of the show.  Greg’s request that exact words be used and Mike and Carol’s agreeing to such is one of those credibility strains that made The Brady Bunch so fun and memorable.  Peter and Bobby’s frogs add the craziness that also defined the show.  Let’s begin our review!

open1

The story opens with Greg and Bobby arriving home.  Bobby thanks Greg for taking him to the pet store.  Bobby has laid out $2 to purchase a frog.  The pet store is having a albumfrog jumping contest with a $25 prize for the furthest jumping amphibian.  In today’s dollars, Bobby paid approximately $11 for a frog that might win him $140.  Assuming the pet store knew a lot of people would participate, it is a clever way to sell frogs.  Greg has done some shopping of his own.  He is carrying an album that appears to read “Strawberry Shortcakes”.  A Google search produced only albums and music related to the line of toys that was not sold until the early 1980s.  Should some reader recall an actual Strawberry Shortcakes band or album from this time, please share with us more information!

Inside, Bobby shows his frog to Mike and Carol.  He shares that he has named the jumping jackpot contender Spunker.  At this point during the show’s original run, one might have feared the entire episode was going to be about jumping frogs.  Fortunately, the actual plot is soon introduced.  Bobby praises Greg’s fine driving skills and gets his older brother in a mess of trouble.  Bobby describes Greg’s avoidance of a collision with a large truck on the freeway.  Mike and Carol question Greg for more details about the incident.  Bobby shares that Greg was neither cut off or speeding, but distracted as he read the back of the album he’d just purchased.  Mike and Carol are furious.  Bobby slinks away as Greg’s punishment is doled out.  He will not be allowed to “the car” for a week.  Greg is very unhappy and protests.  Mike responds by threatening to take away the driving privileges for two or three weeks.  This may have been the most angry we ever saw Mike and Carol.  Readers, feel free to share any times Mike and Carol were angrier.  For possibly doing bodily harm to himself and Bobby and totaling the car, I think Greg got off easy with only a week’s loss of driving privileges.

frogtalk2

Outside, Bobby is trying to get Spunker to jump.  Peter arrives home and questions if the frog came from Burke’s Pond.  Upon learning Bobby spent $2 on Spunker, Peter scoffs at the idea as the local pond is full of frogs.  During this scene, Peter is wearing a hat.  As the Brady kids never wore one before, unless playing a sport or in a costume/getup, this closeuplooked off to me.  Greg coasts into the garage on his bicycle.  He has just made a trip to the record store only to find out the tickets to a rock concert are sold out.  Greg chides Bobby for getting him banished to his bicycle for a week.  He asks how Bobby could get to be so stupid in such a short time.  Geez Greg, you nearly got your little brother killed or maimed earlier in the day and now you are insulting him?  One can surmise the still developing teenage mind can mix up priorities and trigger unreasonable emotions.  During this scene, there were some extreme close up shots that were not common on The Brady Bunch.  Maybe these were last minute retakes.

Greg’s ticket dilemma continues into the next scene.  He calls a friend to share the news that the record store was sold out of the tickets.  The only way to get some now would be to go to the stadium and buy them.  Without a car, this can’t be done.  Why he didn’t ask Alice if he might borrow her bus pass or ask Carol to drive him to the stadium is not made known.

Back outside, Peter has since procured a frog of his own.  His came from the local pond.  He shares some details about it with Jan and Cindy.  Cindy inspires Peter to name his amphibian competitor Old Croaker.  As he goes to rustle up some frog grub, he places the beast under his cap.  We now know why Peter had donned the ill fitting cap.  By looking at the earlier shot of him wearing it, it looks like strong sneeze by somebody standing nearby would have blown that hat right off his head.  Alice walks by and sees the hat scuttle around and initially thinks she is going crazy.  Peter watches from across the yard and pretends to be oblivious to the moving hat.  Once Alice is spooked enough by the moving hat, she gets another jolt by lifting it to see the frog.

In the next scene, Greg attempts to butter Mike up before asking for an exception to using the car.  Mike emerges from his office with some plans he has been working on.  Greg looks them over and praises their high quality.  Mike is suspicious and rightfully so.  Greg asks for an exception that will allow him to drive right to the stadium and then back.  Mike won’t hear of it.  Greg is forbidden from using “the car”.  With his flattery plan failing with Mike, Greg’s desperation increases.  He then calls an acquaintance named George.  I say acquaintance because as Greg begins the conversation, he states it has been a while since the pair has spoken.  Also, it is evident that Greg would not have even thought to call the fellow up had he not been seeking a favor.  George can’t help Greg out, but does suggest that Greg use his car to go to the stadium.

At the supermarket, Greg’s attempt at exploiting a loophole in his punishment is made known.  While shopping, Carol encounters George’s mother Jenny.  She offers Carol a ride home.  Since Greg borrowed her son’s car, she assumed Carol’s was out of commission.  It was a clever way on the script writer’s part for Mike and Carol to find out about Greg’s circumventing his punishment.  One can only imagine what would have been Greg’s explanation to his parents of how he came to get tickets for the show when they found out he had them.   During this scene, one will notice that all the products in the supermarket either have obscured labels or the products are turned in a way so that the brands are not seen.

Jenny was played by Gracia Lee.  Her other television credits included appearances on Little House On The Prairie, Diff’rent Strokes and One Day At A Time.  Feature films to her credit include “Two Minute Warning” and “Schizoid”.  Her final acting credit on IMDB was a 1992 episode of The Wonder Years.  She died in 1995.

BUSTED!

The scene changes from the supermarket to Mike’s den flawlessly.  I’ve always appreciated when this is accomplished on a TV show.  When the conversation from one scene shifts to another as though it is continuing, it transitions scenes nicely.  Greg is summoned to the den where Mike is none too happy to learn that Greg was out driving.  Greg tries to defend his actions by stating Mike only limited him from driving the Brady’s

car.  Such loopholes and thinking is very in line with how many teenagers think.  I could easily see a younger version of myself or my stepson making such a case.  Carol asks if Greg really thought his driving restriction was limited only to their car.  Greg replies he knows only what he heard.  What a terrific bit of writing Greg’s lines are in this scene.   Kudos to Barry Williams for delivering them so well.  Mike tells Greg there is no doubt he knew he was not to drive any car.  Mike then says the punishment he is about to give leaves no room for misunderstanding.  Greg is grounded for ten days.  He may only leave the house to go to school.  Greg’s response sounds about the whiniest he ever was on the series as he protests being grounded.  He laments that this punishment means he will miss the concert.  He storms off slinging his arms and saying “Awwrgh!”  Mike and Carol show no sympathy as he leaves.

As Mike and Carol prepare to retire for the night, we see Mike exercising.  I recall Bob Hartley on “The Bob Newhart Show” doing the same.  The last thing I want to do before falling into bed for the night is get worked up and and sleep in sweaty pajamas.  This seems like the worst time of the day to decide to exercise.  Maybe the 1970s had some school of thought that suggested otherwise.  Greg pays Mike and Carol a visit and pleads his case.  He now wants to live by “exact words”.  Here is where the episode gets a little crazy.  Mike agrees to this nonsense!  He lifts Greg’s ten day punishment and agrees that from now on, exact words will be the rule of the house.  While it makes for an entertaining remainder of this episode, the idea that a parent would agree to such is crazy.  After Greg leaves, Carol says she can’t believe Mike let Greg get away with pleading such a case.  Mike tells Carol that living by exact words is no easy task.  This goes both ways!  I can’t see Mike or Carol taking on the extra stress that comes with exact words just to win an argument with a teenager.  The lifting of Greg’s punishment due to the lack of using exact words is a bit of a stretch too.

practice

The frog b-plot continues outside.  The girls all watch Peter and Bobby’s frog participate in their own jumping contest.  Old Croaker is the victor and Bobby questions if Spunker is sick.  He laments wasting $2 on a thoroughbred frog and heads to the pond in search of a mutt.  As I watched this scene, I could not help but notice that Marcia looks really nice in that shade of blue.

Exact words come back to haunt Greg in the next few scenes.  He arrives home and it is almost 11.  Mike questions if Greg washed Carol’s car.  Greg says he forgot but will do so the following day.  Mike reminds him that per his exact words it was to be done today.  Greg goes outside to wash his car in his pajamas and robe.  He soon finds himself sprayed with water.  With this complete, he bids Carol goodnight.  She questions if another chore is done.  He had traded chores with Marcia.  Exact words see Greg washing dishes late into the night.

exactswordsbackfire

The frog jumping plot soon clashes with the main plot.  Peter and Bobby look over Bobby’s new assortment of frogs.  In a funny line, Peter suggests Bobby drained the pond of all the frogs.  Bobby has so many now he can’t recall which is which.  The boys ask smugGreg about transportation to the frog jumping contest and he says no way.  His younger brothers will just have to make other arrangements as he is bound for the rock concert.  Understandably, Peter and Bobby go to Mike and Carol with this predicament.  Greg gets no sympathy from his parents.  They have their own plans for the evening.  Mike even suggests their plans could have been changed, but Greg’s commitment to exact words sees that they will not.  Since Greg had told the boys he would take them, he is going to do just that.  Peter gives the smuggest of expressions when he sees that Greg has lost this fight.  An irate Greg questions what he will tell his rock concert date, Rachel.  In a funny line, Peter says for him to tell her there is a frog jumping contest.

Greg’s entire night is not ruined.  He breaks his date with Rachel who is disappointed, but shares she really only wanted to spend time with him.  The pair agree to go see a movie after the frog jumping contest.  Greg should have asked Rachel if she enjoys watching frogs jump.  Then they could have spent the entire night together.

hurry

Peter and Bobby are hurriedly dropped of by Greg who is anxious to go pick up Rachel.  They both lament their frogs’ poor performance in the contest.  Then they notice said frogs were left in the backseat of the car!

The disastrous result of the forgotten frogs is predictable, but still funny.  How neither Greg nor Rachel heard the frogs croaking in the backseat is not made known.  The movie playing on the screen is the same one they saw last time at the drive-in.  A reference is made to the last time they went to a movie together with Bobby in tow.  So enraptured with each other or the movie, both Rachel and Greg fail to hear the box of frogs opening in the back seat.

Soon, frogs are hopping all over the car.  The first one lands square on Rachel’s head!  Another one lands on the pizza Greg purchased at the snack bar.  That snack bar staff sure doesn’t skimp on the cheese when making a pizza!  Look how much is on that thing!  Well, there is a lot of cheese in the middle of the pizza.  It made for a funny visual, but not a very appetizing pizza.  Greg and Rachel just have a good laugh over the frog fiasco.

Back at home, Greg tells Mike and Carol about what happened and they all have a laugh over it.  He also asks if the exact words doctrine may be tossed.  That is agreed upon and all is well.  Greg bids his parents good night and leaves the room.  Some playful goodnight banter involving exact words is exchanged between Mike and Carol.  The closing squares then appear and are followed by the end credits.  So, for the second time in season four, the normal sequence of squares, epilogue and credits is altered.

Thank you for joining me to review “Greg Gets Grounded”.  While the main plot has a most questionable parenting decision, the episode remains fun and pretty solid.  It would take a show like The Brady Bunch to somehow meld a frog jumping contest with a plot about a teenager’s conflict with his parents.  Your thoughts on this episode are most welcome!  Next week, we will be experiencing singing and dancing Brady kids again as we review “Amateur Nite”.   Have a great weekend!

I am a lifelong fan of the Brady Bunch. I love it for it's wholesomeness, it's absurdity and how it serves as a time capsule for a time that really never existed, but so many of us wish it did. The show was off the air by the time I was born, but I enjoyed it daily at 4:35 PM for years on Atlanta's Superstation 17, TBS. Through the years I've enjoyed the Brady Bunch spinoffs (however short lived), revivals in pop culture, books, reunions, movies and spoofs. Now, I am excited to be revisiting the show after nearly a decade's hiatus from viewing. I am a parent now, so there may be some new perspectives never before experienced. I hope my fellow fans, lovers and haters alike of the Brady Bunch will join me on this blogging adventure and share your own thoughts and observations.

  1. This has always been one of my favorite episodes, so I enjoyed the review. I love when Greg gets wet, twice. The use of the word “freeway” gives the episode a very California feel to it.

The movie at the drive-in also appeared in an episode of Happy Days. The music that was used with it in this episode (or was it the earlier one?) was also used when the Bradys rode on mules down into the Grand Canyon.

This was the third of four appearances by Sherwood Schwartz’s daughter Hope, and her second as Rachel. She didn’t necessarily seem to be a great actress at the time, though she enunciated well. But since I have a thing for redheads, I always liked seeing her.

    1. Schwartz’s daughter also appears in the last episode of the series, but for some reason she isn’t Rachel. I realize the part wasn’t cast when the script was written, (and heavily rewritten when RR refused to do it) but I have never understood why they didn’t change the name to Rachel, when they found out Hope would be playing the part. It wouldn’t have effected the plot, and would have helped the continuity of the series.

      1. As was suggested in another episode’s comments, a writer would get a royalty if the same character was used, later on. A new writer would want that royalty for themselves and subsequently, would create a new character for a returning actor.

    2. Thanks Classic TVLover! I might someday finally watch Happy Days and see a lot of these subtle connections. If nothing else, I’d like to see the Maureen McCormick episode. Great observation about Hope Sherwood. It would have been interesting to see how she would do in a more challenging role. Red heads do seem to have a special allure about them. The presence of Scarlett Johansson only increased my enjoyment of The Avengers films.

    3. I liked Rachel, and I think it would have been fun for her to be married to Greg despite all those disastrous dates! (Nothing against Nora, of course!)

  2. They seemed to be ahead of their time with this episode. In the pre-cell phone era, there were other things that caused driver distraction such as eating, playing music and ogling others in other cars. All of these still exist today, but it wasn’t until the advent of cell phones that distracted driving became such a hot-button topic.

  3. Although it’s Mike that issues Greg’s grounding, Carol is included with phrases like “what we meant” instead of “what I meant” or “what your father meant” when his first punishment is mentioned. The Brady home doesn’t seem like the place where you could pit the parents against one another.

Of course, if Greg had really been grounded at first, he wouldn’t have even been allowed to ride his bicycle to look for concert tickets, like Jan had lost her bike privileges awhile ago. If Mike was really as unfair as Greg claimed, he could have been sterner and told him “no concert”, since that what Greg was aiming for and wound up missing anyway! (In season six’s “Out Of This World”, Greg is “grounded” again and told “no car”, but he isn’t told he can’t go on his planned fishing trip.) I believe that having Greg live by the exact words he insisted on was worse than an extra ten days at home punishment. Since Carol mentioned that Greg had previously been warned about paying attention while driving, he deserved to be taught a lesson for being reckless behind the wheel as well as defying his parents.

I still can’t stop laughing at that scream & spin that Marcia does when she’s almost handed Spunker. Watch Bobby almost drop his frog when this happens!

      1. And then there’s all the other drivers on the freeway that Greg could have affected. The truck he almost hit may have been an oil truck! I wonder if George would have trusted Greg out of the blue with his car if he’d asked him why he couldn’t use his family’s?

      2. Greg will be severely punished when he kills the egg due to bad driving in a future episode when he competes with Marcia for yet another set of chores. Greg will owe Carol one entire egg!

    1. Yeah, one thing that frustrates me about this episode is the indirect communication. Maybe if Mike or Carol told Greg “you’re grounded from driving for a week, and that includes missing the concert”, Greg probably would’ve understood better and this could turn into a very emotional storyline. Certain generations might be intolerant of younger generations because of what they grew up with and the method of communication they use. Believe it or not, I actually rooted for Mike and Carol in this episode since Greg was the one who didn’t pay attention while he was driving and received the punishment. I do think that Greg’s insistence on living by his parents’ exact words was preposterous, and Mike only agreed to it to counterpoint an argument with his son.

    2. > I still can’t stop laughing at that scream & spin that Marcia does when she’s almost handed Spunker.

I wonder if this was just acting or quite real? Chris said that this was one of his favorite episodes because of all the off-screen fun, as teasing Maureen was one of his favorite pastimes. “Maureen was an incredible priss and an easy target for my practical jokes on a normal day. Add the frogs to the set and I was off to the races, putting them in her school desk, her dressing room, threatening to touch her with one. She was petrified of them (as she was with most non-human life forms) and would come unglued if a frog got close to her.” Also, once she was even afraid of a plastic spider he planted. “Goats, frogs, mice, all of Maureen’s favorites.”

  4. -Mike was nearly as furious when Greg took Rachel to the drive in with Bobby and Bobby caused the hole in the car roof ($150 damage would be close to $1000 today). I guess Rachel and drive-ins that are in the same episode cause situations that lead Mike to become furious. Perhaps Mike was just extra mad vs. furious in the hole in roof episode. Mike should have been furious with Dr Whitehead for kidnapping his kids in Hawaii and Jim Backus for his ghost town crimes but mysteriously Mike was not furious in either case.
-It appears that Greg promised Peter and Bobby to take them to frog contest prior to agreeing to exact words. Could Greg have used this as a loophole?
-One of the worst supermarket sets ever. Looked more like a convenience store instead of a full blown supermarket that Carol would have used to feed 9 people.
-I like your comment about the extreme close up shots and them being uncommon on The Brady Bunch. Hadn’t noticed this before.

    1. Great points Marty! Thanks for sharing. I’d have whooped the prospector and Professor Whitehead for putting my family in peril. That supermarket corner reminded me of one of those salvage supermarkets that have different stock each time you visit and sell brands you’ve never heard of.

      1. It’s odd how Mike was ready to square off against Ralph Hinton and Harry Duggan, yet shows great restraint with those two other antagonists.

    2. – Yes, Mike was pretty furious when Bobby punctured a hole in the hood of Greg’s convertible.
      – I can honestly tolerate the thought of Greg using his priorities as a loophole for this episode.
      – Yeah, the interior of the supermarket reminds me of Trader Joe’s or any independent suburban supermarket. Come to think of it, I wonder if that supermarket was the same supermarket the Bradies shopped at in “And Now A Word from Our Sponsor?”
      – There were definitely other BB episodes that used “close-ups”, but this is the first BB episode that comes to mind!

  5. -When Alice encounters Peter’s frog-in-hat she’s carrying a laundry basket of clothes and it looks like she starts to put the clothes on a clothesline. This makes no sense since the Bradys have a dryer as shown in the Bobby safety Monitor episode. And we have never seen clothes hanging in the backyard before. I understand the producers needed Alice to come walking by and that was perhaps the best visual solution – a laundry basket.
-At the drive-in after the frog jumps on the pizza Greg mentions to Rachel “and it came in 34th Place”. But as Greg drives away with the frogs Peter says to Bobby that one of the frogs came in 35th place and Bobby says 49th Place for his. Maybe Greg just had a faulty memory or was trying to crack a lame joke to Rachel.
-Peter wears the ugliest outfits imaginable throughout the entire episode
-The part about Bobby and Peter going to the local pond to find frogs has always bothered me. Brady Bunch is supposed to take place in Southern California. I am from Southern California and we just don’t have local ponds like that here.
-“Exact Words” plot reminds me of the I Love Lucy episode where Lucy bets the others that she can tell the truth always.

    1. I’ve had a dryer for decades, but there are still a few clothes that I’ll hang to dry, because I don’t want them to shrink. Back in the seventies, there were many more clothes that were hung out to dry, and many people still used clotheslines, even though they had dryers. Some were simply women of a certain age, who didn’t completely trust dryers, and some were due to the manufacturers’ instructions on the label.

    2. The pond reference made me think of Leave It To Beaver. Thanks for sharing that about Southern California. I was wondering about that. As for the clothesline, that is a good point. I remember seeing Kay pushing a laundry cart through the yard. I like the crisp feel of a towel dried on the line. Maybe some of the Bradys did too.

    3. lol “I Love Lucy” (Lucy Tells the Truth)

Lucy told Ethel that she thought Carolyn Applebee’s apartment looked like some Chinese Modern nightmare or something like that. Then Ethel (trying to win a bet that Lucy couldn’t go a day without lying) asks Lucy (in front of Carolyn) “What do you think of Carolyn’s apartment Lucy?”, to which Lucy (truthfully) tells Carolyn, “I said your apartment looks like a dream! Isn’t that what I said, Ethel?” Classic!

Fun review, and a fun episode! One of the very best of the series, without a doubt!

    1) Re: Strawberry Shortcake’s album…the closest thing I know of is a group known as the Strawberry Alarm Clock, a “psychedelic rock” band from the late ‘60s. I think they had a couple of hits but are best known for their song “Incense and Peppermints”. That was one of those songs that most people recognize when they hear it, although they may or may not know the name of it.

    2) I’m a little surprised that Mike and Carol didn’t squawk at least a little bit over Bobby spending $2 on a frog. Two dollars was a lot of money in those days.

    3) Greg probably should have told Bobby not to say anything about their little freeway incident. Bobby probably would have agreed to it since nothing happened.

    4) That was a good exchange when Peter asked “can anybody enter the contest?” And Bobby replied “no, it’s just for frogs”

    5) I think Pete probably needed the oversized hat with all that hair.

    6) Alice doesn’t even ask Peter what his hat is doing in the middle of the yard? And she knows it’s Peters hat but she doesn’t ask him what’s under it?

    7) Regarding Greg borrowing George’s car – I know we see it on TV a lot where one kid borrows another kid’s car… but in real life, we were told never to drive anyone else’s car nor are we to let anyone else drive our car. When we started driving our parents made it clear that no one was to drive our car except us

    8) Carol told Greg how she found out about him driving George’s car (i.e. meeting Jenny in the market). If I were Carol I might not have told Greg how I found out. Sometimes it’s better to let kids wonder how their parents find out things that we as kids tried to hide from them. Ward Cleaver did that to Wally and Beaver one time on Leave it to Beaver for just that reason. He wanted the boys to think that anytime they did something wrong, there’s a pretty good chance their parents would find out.

    9) It’s quite insane to do 50 deep knee bends right before bed. Not only will exercises keep you awake in the short-term, but who wants to go to bed all sweaty?

    10) Greg wants to use exact words so there’s “no communication gap”…We’ve heard the term “communication gap” on a couple of Brady episodes during this season. That was a big pop psychology phrase at the time. We heard it earlier in “Cyrano de Brady”…when Peter wants to know if Kerry got his love letter, Jan says “Peter, we’ve got a communication gap going here”. (Note: Kids didn’t really talk like that in those days!)

    11) Regarding Mike’s decision to allow Greg to get away with it… we could see Mike’s brain working for a couple of seconds while he thought about Greg’s proposal. He undoubtedly knows that Greg has made any number of promises to do things over the years and forgotten to do them and then promised to do them the next day. With a history like that, Mike knows they’ll be able to nail Greg pretty quickly… and they do. In fact when Greg admits that he forgot to wash Carol’s car he nonchalantly blows it off and says “oh sorry I’ll do it tomorrow” like it’s a common occurrence that he forgets those things and that’s his typical response. But I agree that his punishment for looking at the album cover while driving on the freeway was really lenient.

    12) Marcia really does look good in that shade of blue. The shade was similar to the outfit she wore to see Dr. Vogel the dentist. Light blue was a very pretty color on her

    13) During the Frog race we see the wagon in the background by the garden. Who in that family still uses a wagon ???

    14) Greg gets home and is ready for bed at 11:00. Mike is still down in the den working then after Greg wash Carol’s car it’s about 11:45 and Carol looks like she’s writing a letter while Mike is taking a shower. It’s almost midnight and things are really hopping at the Brady house but I guess it’s Friday night so maybe that’s part of it

    15) That was funny when Greg asked Carol “Is Dad here” and Carol says “he’s taking a shower” and Greg says “yeah I had one too”

    16) Greg actually expects Mike and Carol to change their plans to take Peter and Bobby to the frog jumping contest?? Btw, that was a perfect reaction from the boys (esp Peter) when Greg was told he had to take them to the contest.

    17) Greg offers no explanation about the frog jumping contest to Rachel other than “there’s just no way out, honest” and she doesn’t even question it. If I was Rachel I’d at least want to know how that happened

    18) LOL I love the shot of the Frog on the edge of the box right after Greg says to Rachel “we’re all alone now”

    19) On a personal note I missed this episode when it first aired on January 19th 1973. I was at Madison Square Garden that night watching the Harlem Globetrotters. At that time, the most famous of the Globetrotters where Meadowlark Lemon, Marques Haynes (the world’s greatest dribbler) and Curly Neal, who kind of took over the “greatest dribbler” title from Haynes, who was getting up in years (for a basketball player).

    1. Thanks as always for some great thoughts! don’t think Bobby intentionally ratted out Greg for the freeway incident. It seemed more to me like genuine praise that he didn’t realize Greg would get in trouble for. The line about the contest being only for frogs is a great one. Alice definitely should have questioned Peter’s hat just laying in the yard like that.

I’ve wanted to see the Globetrotters live for a long time. The tickets aren’t cheap though.

      1. Good point; Greg probably never thought it would come to Bobby spilling the beans while in the process of praising Greg’s driving skills. Since nothing happened, he probably figured Bobby would play with his frog and forget the whole incident. Lucky for us Bobby decided to brag on Greg, it gave us a GREAT episode!

Very true about the Globetrotters… several years ago they came to SW Florida and just for the heck of it I checked the ticket prices… I wasn’t going to go, but i was curious ab. the price. I don’t remember what they were but they were VERY expensive!

My Dad actually played a serious game against them when he played in college (during the 1940s). The Trotters won by two points; no room for clowning around in that game. I have the magazine article from my Dad’s scrapbook. Very cool stuff!

  7. I love this episode! It is one of the best of the series! Very realistic conflict, real anger, probably the angriest we have seen Mike, and the angriest we have seen Carol since she found out the kids were giving Alice the “Cold Shoulder Treatment” in “Goodbye Alice, Hello.”

A lot of strong interpretations to this episode! For instance, do you think that Greg really understood that Mike and Carol forbid him to do any driving at all? Or just not to drive “the car” for a week? This is a tough one, and there’s no right or wrong answer to this question. I think that Greg was sincere when he pleaded with Mike and Carol that he did not break any rules. He’s not an Eddie Haskell type personality, whom as we know from “Leave it to Beaver” would use deceit and manipulation to get what he wanted. Playing it all nice for adults, while intimidating kids. But Greg Brady is not the Eddie Haskell type. Eddie would really try to get away with driving while grounded regardless, but Greg is not like that at all.

This episode shows the power of the importance of direct communication, while at the same time, showing that no one can live by “Exact Words” all the time, because circumstances in life and unpredictabilities can occur each day. Lessons in this episode are really good for all family members, not only showing the essentialness of communicating clearly, but also showing unexpected situations can come up, and people must be fair and reasonable about those. In other words, don’t make promises that you can’t deliver upon. At the same time, all parties involved must understand that conditions may come up at are out of the persons’ control.

The frogs jumping on the pizza is one of the funniest moments in the series! Some cool trivia here!

1.)They had to reshoot the scene about twenty times because the kids and crew were laughing so hard.
2.) They used a model frog for the one that jumps on the pizza, so that a real frog’s feet wouldn’t be burned.
3.) I read somewhere that the pizza itself was a prop and not real. Close-ups of it look pretty gross, and I love pizza!
4.) Hope Sherwood had to wash her hair several times after doing this scene, but was a wonderful sport about doing it.
5.) Greg’s lines, “I don’t think we’ll be eating this tonight!” “And he was in 34th place too!” were ad-libbed by Barry and were so funny they were left in post-production!
6.) It is believed that Peter’s line, “Betcha no one else went to a drive in movie with a bunch of frogs!” was also ad-libbed. Chris’ timing of that line is just as funny as Barry’s two ad-libs!
7.) This episode on the DVD fades in from Greg and Rachel at the Drive in, to Mike and Carol in bed laughing about it. There are no fill in squares between the two scenes. Syndication would sometimes fill in with the squares after Greg’s ad-lib lines. When TV Land showed the Brady Bunch, the squares would frill in right after Greg says, “That does it!” You miss the last two lines!
With regard to #7, no one really knows how the original airing of “Greg Gets Grounded” aired with that final sequence. It is strange that the fill in squares were seemingly added later in syndicated prints!

      1. Another thing that I forgot to post!

They had a frog handler on top the car ready to drop the frogs on cue! Love that whole scene!!!!

        Gross 😛

Re: your #5,6,7 – I just read on another site the same thing about Barry’s ad libs and how they don’t show up on all dvd versions; didn’t know about Peter’s line also bring an ad lib.

    3. I remember seeing this episode when it originally aired back in 1973, and if I’m not mistaken they went with a preview of the “Keep On” song and dance number in place of a final tag for the episode. This is one of the only times I remember a preview for the following week’s episode, and I remember really looking forward to watching it.

  8. Anyone notice that when Greg gets back from purchasing the tickets, that he and Mike both are wearing different outfits than when Zagreb called his day friend? Carol is wearing the same outfit she wore when she and Marsha left for the store, before Greg tried to call his friends.

  10. When Greg’s friend’s mother and Carol ran into each other at the store, and offered Carol a ride home, it’s a wonder that she did not assume that Greg borrowed George’s car because Carol was using their car.

    1. George was likely NOT a friend. His parents appeard to be friends with Greg’s parents. Chances are Greg knew George but George was not the type of kid Greg associated with so he basically tolerated him and when the time came when he needed something and his freinds all said no he turned to George as a last resort

      Liked by 3 people

    2. The way I read it is Greg isn’t really a friend of George but an acquaintance. That is why Greg hasn’t seen him, because he really doesn’t want to be friends, just when he wants something. That is why Greg says “George ol’ pal,” when starting the call.

  11. 1) I wonder if Peter was the only kid around there who thought of getting a free frog from Burke’s Pond, instead of purchasing one at the pet store and blowing $2.

    2) I didn’t see why Greg just couldn’t ask Mike to drive him to the stadium for tickets.

    3) I believe Greg’s friend’s mother could just assume that Greg didn’t have his own car because Carol drove hers to the store and Mike was using his.

    4) It was rather insane that Bobby got all those frogs from Burke’s Pond. Why couldn’t he just get 1.

    5) Peter said his frog came in 35th. However, Greg told Rachel he was in 34th place.

    1. And I think as far as the group name on Greg’s album (which I never noticed before this), they got the idea from the ‘trippy’ rock names of the times like the Strawberry Alarm Clock, the Strawbs and Deep Purple.

  12. I get all the comments about Mike and Carol going (very, very) easy on Greg and his highway near-fiasco. However, I didn’t see anywhere in the comments about what a just “no driving” punishment would be.

So please, enlighten us. How long should Greg have been barred from driving?

Same question goes regarding comments about Greg’s disobedience of Mike’s “no driving” punishment. I only see that some people thought a 10-day house detention was too light given the severity of the offense. Again, how long would YOU have punished Greg for? Would he get slapped across the face for attempting to protest the more severe punishment?

    Interested in comments.

    1. Greg’s punishment for looking at an album cover while driving was a week of not using the car. Mike also says when Greg wants to make an exception to allow the concert tickets to be bought, “the car.”

The ten day grounding was added ON TOP when Greg violated the not using “the car” punishment

When they agree to exact words, Greg gets off of the ten day punishment but Mike says he still has three days (or whatever) left to go on the previous don’t use “the car” punishment.

    2. They are pretty tough on him but I think not using the car for a week is a fair punishment. We all make mistakes. What was unfair was they decided to ground him 10 days for borrowing some kid’s car Greg did not even like. They parents never said not to drive (though that was their intent). They said “you cannot use the cars for a week”. They had no idea Greg would use that loophole but he did. They should have let that go and told him next time the punishment will be NO DRIVING. Yes why Greg did not ask Mike or Carol to drive him to the place to get his tickets is a mystery. But they did punish him in the end by making Greg take Bobby to some frog jumping contest because Greg promised. If I were Greg I would have taken the car, threw Bobby out a block from the house and picked up Rachel and went to the concert anyway and get grounded for a month. Going to that concert would be worth it. At least I know Mike would not have beaten me

      1. Hi Mark,
See my comments below as to why I thought Greg didn’t ask the folks to drive him anywhere.

I can see Greg ditching Bobby a few blocks too soon to then motor on to his concert date.

  13. Re: the close-ups, I agree they’re probably re-takes. My wife and I have been watching Star Trek (TOS) lately. It’s fun to see how the series “came into its own” (character development, Starfleet regulations, backstory, technical/scientific “facts,” etc.). For the first 8 or 10 episodes, they keep doing these weird close-ups where they cast the top half of the face in deep, dark shadows. We figured these were re-takes, probably done without anyone else and not on the original set–and they tried to “cover” for it by making it look artsy with the shadows.

  14. I feel much the same way as other posters that Greg was dealt with lightly and he should have asked for a ride from Mike or Carol or took a bus to get his tickets. But it is in the adolescent mind to try to get technical when there is trouble. Mostly for a joke and to show ‘courage’ (in my 12-year-old sneering mind), in the 6th grade we had a regular weekly assignment to use each of our 20 spelling words for the week in sentences. One week I decided to number my paper 1 to 20, write each word capitalized, then by each one write “…is a word.” By the exact wording of the assignment I did what was required. Buy the teacher wrote at the top of my paper, in that dreadful red ink, ‘ Did you think this was funny?’ Pulling an Exact Words technicality hardly ever works when you do it to be lazy or get out of trouble. For lawyers, I don’t know how it tends to turn out.

    1. I did something similar in 3rd grade when learning about the branches of government. We had to use government terms in a sentence. I remember using “branch” as part of a tree and “I do not know what legislative means”. My mom checked my homework and laughed and then made me redo it.

  15. Observations:

I don’t think Mike and Carol would drive Greg anywhere; what would be the point of suspending the use of the car if they only ended up chauffering him around in it?
Alice may have been an easier one to sway the bus pass from.

Greg sure wasn’t upset about losing out on the cost of two tickets to “a rock concert” whose seats were selling out fast; perhaps he was able to scalp them.

Jan’s face in the screen capture you provide shows her true feeling about the frog. It’s funny when you watch it how squeamish she acts moments before Bobby hands the frog to her and she tortures Marcia with it.

Marcia still covering up her supposed “pooch” of a belly, keeping her arms folded in front while wearing a flattering blue ensemble.

In sitcoms, people stand around while they get sprayed with water. Greg stands there TWICE – once with the garden hose and once with the sink hose. At the kitchen, he even keeps his hand depressing the trigger so the water continues to douse him.
Now, who in real life does that? As soon as anything hits you, you run or immediately shut it off!

    1. It’s interesting that Jan didn’t want anything to do with the frog and was grossed out by it, especially since in season 2 she happily picks up the mouse in the impractical joker episode. I think I’d rather pick up a frog than a mouse, but I guess that’s just me!

  16. While watching this whilst a child, I thought (as a child would), Greg only promised to take Bobby not Peter to the contest. Peter didn’t know about it yet. Then he promised only to take him TO the contest, not back from it.

Then I wondered why Greg wouldn’t simply just amend his words with phrases like, “unless something else comes up.”

  17. Here are ten things I liked about this episode:

    1. How the A-plot and the B-plot collide towards the end of the episode.
    2. Carol running into George’s mother, Jenny, at the grocery store and being offered a ride home, It was a clever way on the script writer’s part for Mike and Carol to find out about Greg’s circumventing his punishment.
    3. Mike exercising before bed.
    4. Cindy and Peter’s banter when she asks him the frog’s name. Peter is the kind of boy who would name a frog “Frog” and Cindy is the kind of girl who would react with “That’s a dumb name!”
    5. Mike and Carol ground Greg for a week after Bobby spills the beans on how Greg glanced at a record album while driving on the highway.
    6. The scene transitioning from the supermarket to Mike’s den. It is done very flawlessly.
    7. “Thanks for opening your big mouth, now I get to ride my bike instead of drive the car.” – Greg
    8. The frogs distracting Greg and Rachel while they’re on their date at a drive-in movie theater.
    9. Greg telling Mike and Carol about the frog incident and asking them if the exact words doctrine can be dropped.
    10. The fact that Bobby and Peter didn’t bother to take their frogs out of the back seat of the car upon exiting Greg’s convertible.

    1. Another funny line from Peter came from after Cindy telling him that “Frog” was a dumb name:

  18. Bobby’s inadvertent snitching on Greg is foreshadowed in “Goodbye, Alice, Hello.” During the scene where Greg and Peter are repairing the lamp they broke Greg says they shouldn’t tell Bobby about it since he may accidentally let the information slip due to his age.

Also, during the scene in Mike’s den Greg has his hand on the back of Bobby’s neck. When Bobby starts to talk about Greg’s “great” driving Greg gives his neck a little squeeze as if to say: “Shut up,Bobby!”

One thing I missed during my initial viewing was the look of disgust on Jan’s face when Bobby kisses the frog before the warm-up race with Peter. Can’t say I blame her. That was pretty gross.

The author didn’t seem to like Full House very much, which is why I didn’t bother reading much of them. You, on the other hand, have a fantastic blog here and are actually a Brady Bunch fan. I thank you for that.

  20. That’s the one. That blogger had no love for the show. His commentary was fun however and he reviewed every episode of the original series and the first season of Fuller House. I enjoyed Full House’s early years but grew weary of it as the seasons went by. The idea of blogging every episode of a show like he did appealed to me. I’ve always been a fan of The Brady Bunch for its wholesome values, cheesiness at times and its forays into the absurd. Thanks for the kind words and for commenting!!

  21. Maria’s reaction to Bobby asking her to hold the frog was obviously real. I’d bet Mike Lookingland did that on his own because she seemed genuinely surprised by his move. Another real reaction I think was when Bobby and Peter were trying to corral all the jumping frogs. Bobby giggles at one point. It seemed like the kids really had a great time doing that show.

  23. I’ve seen this episode multiple times and I can confidently say that “Greg Gets Grounded” is one of the best Brady Bunch episodes. This episode tackled the dangers of distracted driving before the introduction of mobile phones. It’s crazy how distracted driving became more prominent when people started owning cell phones and would use their cell phones to text or call people while driving.

    1. The episode starts off with Greg and Bobby coming home. Apparently, Greg took Bobby to buy a pet frog, because the pet store was holding a frog-jumping contest. Before this episode, I had no idea that frog-jumping contests were a way to raise money. You can surmise that the pet store also held rabbit-running contests, bird-singing contests and turtle-spinning contests. Yes, frogs are known for jumping, but what motivated the writers to turn an animal’s ability into a competitive sport?

    2. It turns out Greg has done some shopping, too. He bought an album that reads “Strawberry Shortcakes.” I don’t think there are any musical groups with that name. However, there was a short-lived band called Strawberry Alarm Clock, known for their one-hit wonder “Incense and Peppermints.” My dad liked that song when he was younger.

    3. While Bobby shows Mike and Carol his new frog Spunker, he mentions that Greg is a great driver and nearly missed getting into a car collision. This catches Mike and Carol’s attention. Bobby elucidates by saying that Greg was glancing at the cover of a record album he just bought while he was driving. It looks like Bobby hasn’t fully learned his lesson about snitching from “Law and Disorder.”

    4. After Bobby tells Mike and Carol about Greg nearly getting into a car collision with the large truck on the freeway, both of them go from worried to furious. Mike and Carol have decided that they should ground Greg for a week by taking away his driving privileges. Greg becomes royally pissed, and Mike threatens to extend the punishment to three weeks. This is definitely the angriest I’ve seen Mike and Carol. They were also very angry at Bobby for puncturing the top of Greg’s convertible with an umbrella in “The Big Bet.”

    5. The word “freeway” has a California feel to it.

    6. It turns out that Peter also knows about the frog-jumping contest and plans on going to Burke’s Pond to find a frog. He is wearing an oversized hat and the exact same shirt he wore in “The Tiki Caves.”

    7. I can understand Greg accusing Bobby, but you’re right that Greg was the one responsible for almost getting in a car collision.

    8. I love the Brady Bunch and have seen the vast majority of the episodes, and know for a fact that this was not the only episode where close-ups were used. However, this is the episode that everyone remembers. I can surmise that close-ups displayed in this episode were last-minute retakes.

    9. Yes, Greg should have asked Alice if he could borrow her bus pass to go down to the stadium and purchase tickets for the rock concert. I love how the writers didn’t reveal the name of the rock band Greg wanted to see in this episode. There were so many rock-and-roll bands from the ’70s, such as the Doobie Brothers, Leonard Skin Nerd, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, Grand Funk Railroad, Deep Purple, the Eagles and KISS. I am passionately curious what band Greg was trying to obtain concert tickets from.

    10. Speaking of Alice, she and Marcia are barely in this episode.

    11. Peter went down to Burke’s pond to obtain a frog of his own. We get some hilarious dialogue between him and Cindy. Peter originally names his frog “Frog”, Cindy tells him that’s a dumb name, Peter’s defense is “It’s a lot better than calling him Dog”, Cindy convinces Peter to name his frog Croaker, and Peter renames his frog Old Croaker.

    12. It was an out-of-character moment for Jan to be grossed out by the frog when we saw her hold a small white laboratory mouse (and scare her sisters) in “The Impractical Joker.”

    13. Very clever of Peter to hide Old Croaker under his big hat.

    14. Greg tries to appease his father by looking at architectural plans that he designed and complimenting them. He says “By the way, Dad” and Mike has already figured out that Greg wants to drive the car and Mike refuses. “You cannot drive the car for one week, period.”

    15. George was most likely not a friend of Greg’s. Apparently, their parents are friends with each other. There’s a pretty good chance Greg knew George but he wasn’t the kind of guy Greg associated with. I can surmise that Greg reached out to George as a last resort, since all his other friends had other plans or didn’t want to go through the trouble of driving Greg to the stadium to purchase tickets for a rock concert.

    16. The establishing shot for the supermarket scene is the exact same one we previously saw in “And Now A Word From Our Sponsor.”

    17. WHY the hell is Jenny wearing hair curlers at a supermarket?

    18. Jenny assumes that Carol’s car is at the mechanic’s because her son came over to George’s house to borrow his car, drive to the stadium and buy tickets for the rock concert.

    19. The transition from the supermarket scene to the scene in Mike’s den is one of the best transitions I’ve ever seen on The Brady Bunch.

    20. Mike and Carol find out about Greg disobeying them and escort him into the den. Greg defends his actions by saying that Mike and Carol forbade him from using the Bradies’ car, as opposed to “no driving.” Furious with his son disobeying his parents, Mike grounds Greg for ten more days. If Mike was this furious, he could’ve been more direct, grounded Greg and told him “No concert”, since that was what Greg was aiming for. Naturally, Greg is not happy with his punishment.

    21. I don’t get why Mike was exercising before bed.

    22. The episode gets even crazier when Greg tells Mike and Carol that he wants to live by “exact words” and Mike agrees to this, but only to counteract an argument with his teenage son. Damn, this episode’s conflict escalated quickly! It’s true that teenagers are very misunderstood and lack the maturity that most adults demonstrate, but adhering to exact words is very enigmatic. I can’t imagine anybody adhering to precise words just because he/she lost his/her driving privileges. Most teenagers would suck it up and spend the majority of their time realizing the error of their ways, and understanding that their parents grounded them because they care about his or her safety. Without rules, there would be anarchy.

    23. Marcia looks very nice in that monochromatic blue outfit.

    24. What happened to Spunker? Why wasn’t he jumping?

    25. Because Greg chose to live by “exact words”, we see him doing his chores an hour before the day ends. Greg washes his dad’s car and washes dishes late into the night.

    26. Greg doesn’t go to the rock concert with Rachel, but he still goes on a date with her and takes her to see a movie. It is the exact same movie shown in “The Big Bet.” In fact, this episode could be the sequel to “The Big Bet”, but this episode focuses on Greg and not Bobby.

    27. Mike and Carol want Greg to take the boys to the frog-jumping contest because he insisted on living by his “exact words.” I think the “exact words” agreement was made strictly between Greg and his parents. However, Greg obliges and takes them to the frog-jumping contest.

    28. After dropping Peter and Bobby off at the house, the boys forget to grab the box with the frogs inside.

    29. Greg and Rachel see a movie together without Bobby, and he comes back from the snack bar with pizza and popcorn. Not realizing that the frogs were in the backseat of Greg’s convertible, the frogs start jumping all over the pizza! There was so much cheese on that pizza, it looked unappetizing!

    30. Last, but not least, Greg tells Mike and Carol about the frogs jumping on the pizza and Carol suggests that he invents a new dish “Pepperoni Frog Pizza.” I can honestly see Greg commissioning frog as a possible pizza topping to “the pizza parlor” or any other pizzeria that can’t decide between a French theme and an Italian theme. The episode ends on a good note – Greg and Mike agree to abandon the whole exact words doctrine, and Greg is no longer grounded!

  24. I agree but poster who said Greg only agreed to take Bobby and not Peter and then only TO the contest and not a return trip had a point.

Greg could’ve pointed this out and left Mike and Carol in a position where only Bobby would go and then have no way of getting home. Mike and Carol said they could change their plans but would not because Greg wanted to live by “exact words.” It would be interesting to see how far this could’ve been pushed.
