Episode 16: Out Of This World

Hello again readers, family, friends and perhaps those from another planet.  I’m so glad you could join me today to review “Out Of This World”.  This episode is a good one up until the final couple of minutes when it goes off the track.  It gives us a few guest stars with interesting resumes.  I remember enjoying this one very much as a kid, but as an adult not so much.  Please share your own thoughts on this episode and extra terrestrial life in the comments section!

open1

The episode opens like no other Brady Bunch episode before it.  It would seem a talk show was airing, not a family sitcom.  The guest on the talk show is former astronaut James McDivitt.  The host, Mario Machado, welcomes his guest and then asks him about the unidentified flying object (UFO) he observed on a mission to space.  I did not realize until writing this blog that James McDivitt was not just an actor playing an astronaut and that he did claim to see a UFO while on the Gemini 4 Mission.  However, by the time Mario Machado got around to interviewing James McDivitt, over eight years had passed since the highly questionable object was seen.  According to Wikipedia, McDivitt visited space again in 1969 and later became Manager of Lunar Landing Operations that same year.  He also led a team that planned the lunar exploration program and redesigned the spacecraft to accomplish this task. In August 1969, he became Manager of the Apollo Spacecraft Program and was the program manager for Apollo missions 12-16.  So, after all of these wonderful accomplishments, he is invited on a talk show to talk about a suspect UFO seen almost a decade before.

After McDivitt left NASA, he worked in the business world until the mid-90s and is still with us.  Mario Machado was an actual newscaster from the Los Angeles area who also acted in a number of TV shows and movies.  He typically played news anchors or announcers.  He would win eight Emmy awards during his career.  Mario Machado died in 2013.

open3

After the show, some fans gather around the astronaut for autographs.  Bobby and Peter both have their autographs made out to state they are “good friends” to James McDivitt.  Are autographs really sought out anymore?  There was a time people kept a book just for famous people to sign.  Other than autographed items on Pawn Stars, I’ve not heard much about people seeking them in recent years.

The next scene makes clear why viewers were treated to a news talk show opening the episode instead of a down and out or super excited Brady kid arriving home from school.  The clock on the wall gives the time as 11:45 and Peter and Bobby are fast asleep.  A whirring whistling sound awakens Peter who in turn wakes up Bobby.  They look out  the window to see a UFO hovering in the sky!  They are understandably excited at seeing the craft.  The next morning at the breakfast table, the UFO is discussed and cutlipnobody believes Peter and Bobby.  It is suggested it was a helicopter or a blimp.  Greg comes downstairs and shares he cut himself shaving.  Greg must use a greasy handled straight razor to give himself a gash like that!  Actually, it is some well known Brady Trivia that Barry Williams was in a car accident that resulted in his lip being split open.  However, the show must go on and the injury was written into the script as a shaving mishap.

bplot1

The b-plot commences with Carol having Alice help her arrange fruit for a photograph.  Alice seems a tad irritated at the task.  Alice does have much better things to do during the day than set up a fruit arrangement!  Carol has taken up photography and will be entering a contest.  Much to her ire, those passing through the family room help themselves to some of the fruit on display.

nonbelief

Peter and Bobby arrive home from school dejected as none of their classmates believed they saw a UFO.  In a funny line, they suggest that their classmates took this load of nonsense much less seriously than the typical lies and extensions of truth shared at school.  A plan is put into place to camp in the backyard that night and photograph the watch2UFO.  As the boys set up the night watch, Jan and Cindy come outside to give them a hard time about it.  While this does seem like a crappy thing to do, such goings on are the nature of teenagers when some other kid is on a fool’s errand.  Some heckling can be expected.  Well, in today’s more socially sensitive times, this may no longer hold true, but I sure remember giving and receiving such treatment.

It is not long before the UFO returns.  With the camera at the ready, the boys spring into action.  However, the origin of the flying craft is confirmed not be extra terrestrial, but coming from the Brady home.  From his attic digs, Greg has orchestrated the UFO prank.  Holding a flashlight and blowing a whistle, Greg has created a UFO plausible enough to fool his brothers.  Upon being caught in the act by Marcia, he explains why and how he did it.  After his brother’s told on him for getting home late, he built the UFO pranking contraption using a whistle, a clear plastic curtain, some fishing line and some pulleys nailed to the window frame.  Wow, that is a pretty elaborate setup just to get back at his brothers.  Marcia is 100% on board as the boys squealed on her too.  That must be some whistle.  It looks to be nothing but some thin plastic, but it sure gives off some interesting and very loud sounds.  That must be one powerful flashlight as well!  This was in the days before LED flashlights.  The more I think about the setup, the more I realize how easily the younger brothers should have seen right through this.  A light reflected off  a plastic curtain in a tree and a whistle being blown nearby does not a convincing UFO make.

after

After the boys snap their photos, they rush the film upstairs for Carol to develop.  They are understandably anxious to have photographic evidence of the UFO, but are told they must wait until morning.

Anxiously awaiting the development of his photos, Bobby dreams that night of visitors from another planet.  Why was it always Bobby whose dreams viewers saw?  We’ve seen him win trophies, watch his family die and now visit with aliens.  It was not until the most recent viewing that I realized how one dimensional the UFO visiting Bobby is.  Maybe today’s improved visuals via DVD allowed for this.  The UFO looks to have been borrowed from some amusement park ride it served as the back drop for.  The aliens existing the craft are a cute couple from the planet Kaplutis.  They are very big for their own planet and are surprised that Bobby is very small for his.  As Peter awakens Bobby from his dream, Bobby shares he was about to be a Kaplutian basketball star.  The entire scene is fun and well done.

dream3

Fans of the show like to note how the actor and actress playing the Kaplutians, who were married in real life, were stand-ins for the Brady kids.  While this is true, I was surprised to read both were actors in their own right and appeared on other programs.  Frank Delfino appeared on other hit shows like The Beverly Hillbillies, Bonanza and Lost In Space.  He was a regular on The Feather and Fang Gang.  He last acted in 1988 and died in 1997.  Sadie Delfino appeared elsewhere too.  She was in the feature film “White House Madness” and appeared on an episode of Rhoda.  She last acted in 1975 and died in 1991.

darkroom

The next morning, Carol works at developing the boys’ photos.  In a funny line, both cast doubt on Carol’s ability to develop the pictures and question if they should have taken them to a professional instead.

Down at the breakfast table, the other kids discuss the UFO.  Jan mentions the boys said it was shaped like a cigar.  Uh, why would they do that?  That red thing floating in the sky looks nothing like a cigar.  Maybe the original script called for such a shape to be added in post production.  This may have been a homage to a well known rash of UFO sightings that occurred in the late 19th century where the mysterious craft were identified as being cigar shaped.  You can read about it here after you finish reading this blog.

As a kid, I loved reading tales of UFOs and even scanned the sky a few times myself hoping to see one.  One summer night, I thought my wish had come true.  While sitting on a dock at a local lake, the strangest sparkling light came from over a ridge.  It was a bright beaming ball of light with almost straight lines of light protruding from it.  As it grew closer, the protruding lines of light shrunk and gave way to a small airplane.  I don’t know what environmental factors led to the original appearance of the plane that night, but for a few brief seconds I thought something other worldly was in the sky!

The boys rush downstairs with the photographic “proof”.  The black and white photos with a blob of white light have the family convinced some visitors from another planet hovered above the Brady’s town the night before.  It is not clear if these photos accompanied the boys to school.  However, if they did, I doubt many classmates would have been convinced.  Carol herself is suspicious and says the boys must wait until Mike sees them before calling the newspaper.

mikecalls

Blobs of light against a black background are enough to convince Mike to call the Air Force.  What?  This is where the episode derails for me.  Before alerting the United States Military, it seems Mike would do a bit more of his own research.  A sensible man might spend some time in the backyard himself or have a more knowledgeable local resource look the photos over before calling Carter Air Force Base (which doesn’t really exist by the way).

policevisit

Instead of some official from the Federal government gracing the Brady’s door, a local policeman arrives.  He has little interest in investigating the claim of a flying saucer, but is just two years away from his pension and duty calls.  He is dismissive of the photographic evidence.  He claims he has investigated hundreds of UFO sightings and they are all bunk.  Wow.  There have been hundreds of calls to the police department about UFOs?

guest2

The disbelieving police captain was played by James Flavin.  He had a long career in Hollywood that spanned over 40 years.  He was a regular on the series The Roaring 20s and Man With a Camera.  Per IMDB he was usually cast as “the heavy” in his onscreen roles.  His final acting roles were in some TV movies in 1976.  He died the same year.

Greg comes downstairs and realizes his prank has gone too far when he sees the local police involved.  He takes Mike upstairs to demonstrate his high tech UFO setup.  He does this while the police captain is still there.  Why the guy was even still around is not made clear.  He had all ready called nonsense on the photos.  Also, why Greg had to demonstrate it right away doesn’t make much sense.  Mike should have said, “Look, the police have all ready said there will be no investigation.  Let’s keep this quiet.”  Instead, he allows Greg to demonstrate the setup and amp up the hysteria.  So convincing is a flashlight beamed against clear plastic that even the police captain thinks the UFO is for real.  I will admit to finding it funny that the captain wanted his photo taken reporting the UFO.  Greg’s setup is then shown to the captain who is humiliated at believing for a second UFOs are real.  He and Greg agree to keep the incident quiet and all will be forgotten.

epilogue

All is not forgotten at the Brady house.  Greg is punished for pulling the UFO prank.  The epilogue shows him being grounded from use of the family car that weekend.  He laments the loss of his fishing trip and asks how he will be able to go to the lake.  Carol jokes he could catch a ride on a UFO.  Man, if we needed 100% proof positive this episode had crumbled to nonsense, Carol’s joke here in the epilogue provides it.

Thank you for reviewing “Out Of This World” with me!  With a different conclusion, this might have been one of the series’ best.  Maybe Peter and Bobby could have gotten wise to Greg’s prank and retaliated with an alien visit, a phony Air Force investigation or something similar.  All the boys could have then learned a lesson about fooling others.  Instead, we got what we did.  Your thoughts on the episode are most welcome!  Next week we review “Welcome Aboard”.  I have not watched the Cousin Oliver episodes in a long time, so it should be interesting.  See you next week!

I am a lifelong fan of the Brady Bunch. I love it for it's wholesomeness, it's absurdity and how it serves as a time capsule for a time that really never existed, but so many of us wish it did. The show was off the air by the time I was born, but I enjoyed it daily at 4:35 PM for years on Atlanta's Superstation 17, TBS. Through the years I've enjoyed the Brady Bunch spinoffs (however short lived), revivals in pop culture, books, reunions, movies and spoofs. Now, I am excited to be revisiting the show after nearly a decade's hiatus from viewing. I am a parent now, so there may be some new perspectives never before experienced. I hope my fellow fans, lovers and haters alike of the Brady Bunch will join me on this blogging adventure and share your own thoughts and observations.

  1. If Greg was only trying to get even with his brothers for squealing on him, he could have simply done nothing when they were camping out in the back yard. That way, they would have stayed up so late waiting on the UFO, they would have a hard time getting up for school, or even fall asleep in class, and Greg would not miss his fishing trip.

  2. Sigh. The final pre-Oliver BB episode. They had 25 minutes to fill, so the unnecessary elaborateness of Greg’s payback for Peter and Bobby’s squealing makes sense. Anyone feel free to correct me if I’m wrong, but this is the only BB episode I can recall in which the script was changed to explain an actor’s disfigurement due to an off camera incident. Barry Williams explains the situation in his book. (Minor nitpick: Williams misstates his age when telling the story-referring to as being 17 years old when in fact he was 19 at the time). You’re right on the money as far as this episode going off the rails at the end. I think Robert Reed was just letting things slide by this point. My favorite funny line: when Peter says that Jan and Cindy were both going to be flying objects if they didn’t stop hassling him and Bobby.

      1. We will see another one shortly, however. I can’t remember exactly which episode, but Robbie Rist as Cousin Oliver will have a noticeable cut on his lip throughout an episode. I think I remember he got this from an accident on The Brady Bunch teeter totter in the backyard while the kids were playing between scenes. Pretty sure it’s not the first episode cousin Oliver’s in but one of the ones following.

  3. Jim McDivitt had an impressive astronaut’s resume, but because he was in a later Gemini mission and an early Apollo mission, he never got the acclaim accorded the original Mercury astronauts, or the Apollo 11 crew. Whenever an astronaut was needed as a speaker, and time or budget didn’t allow for a member of the groups mentioned above, Jim McDivitt was one of the astronauts who tended to be chosen.

This episode reflected the UFO craze that was in the US at the time. While interest in UFOs had grown since the Roswell story, and especially reflected the Cold War world of the era, the mid-seventies saw a rebound of UFO interest (and Bigfoot, the Bermuda Triangle, Loch Ness Monster, etc.). This was typified by the pseudo-documentary series In Search Of, narrated by Leonard Nimoy, which appeared a couple of years after this episode.

I always wondered why a police captain would be sent to take a UFO report. A police captain is a fairly high-ranking Officer, usually a division commander, not someone to take what was likely thought of as a crank call.

I always shared your surprise at the elaborate nature of Greg’s hoax. And wouldn’t the sound of the whistle sound like it was coming from Greg’s window immediately above the boys? Wouldn’t they have simply looked in that direction from their own window, or even more, from the backyard, where they would have easily seen Greg and his flashlight in the window?

Not a strong episode, IMHO, but a classic farce. That’s why the cheap UFO in the dream could pass muster, as part of the overall farce.

    1. Great thoughts . I wondered the same about one of the boys happening to look up toward the sound of the whistle.

That paranormal craze carried over to the 80s. I remember my school library had a book on The Bermuda Triangle and UFOs.

  4. 1) “Fright Night” revisited! Again, a Brady child risks life & limb rigging up a hoax to fool his brothers. To paraphrase what Cindy once said, Greg could have fallen off the house! While I liked the Halloween-related episode, others have said the kids were too old for this sort of thing, and now we see it again a season later. Thing is, if Greg shines an image on a clear plastic curtain, are the Dittmeyers across the way seeing and hearing this UFO as well? Did they see the ghost too?

    2) With the appearances of James McDivitt and Mario Machado (whom I fondly remember from the Robocop movies), this marks the last time we see public figures as themselves on the show. Question for the group; have any of you ever met anyone from The Brady Bunch at conventions or book signings?

    3) I’m surprised the Air Force didn’t just hang up on Mike, or transfer him to voicemail! I thought the jaded policeman was funny, but they could have come up with a better transition than a call from the military. I agree that a different plot twist would have made this episode more enjoyable.

    4) Okay, “Greg Gets Grounded” once more! Now, if Greg phones one of his fishing buddies and asks for a ride to the lake, is he disobeying his parents?

    1. I met Barry Williams back in October 1995 when he was starting up his Johnny Bravo show. There was an ad in the main local paper about his appearance at a local community college, and even better there was no admission charge, so I went. He talked about the show and his time on it, then later he put on his copy of the Johnny Bravo jacket and had a few people on stage with him to join in some disco-type dancing. The setting was small & intimate, maybe just room for 100-150 people total. After the show he stayed so fans could get autographs & pictures with him. I had him sign my copy of “Growing Up, Brady”, and since I was lucky enough to see a woman there whom I knew from my Sunday School class, we together got a picture with him. I don’t know where that picture is at the moment, but if/when I find it, I’d love to scan it into my computer to share w/ FB friends or whoever would like to see it. I was also able to sell a spare copy of the TV Guide of 4/4/1970 w/ Brady cast on the cover to a fellow fan, and I took the profit from that sale to buy a Brady t-shirt, which I think is somewhere in my bedroom closet still.

    2. I met Barry Williams in 2006 after a show that he did in the suburbs of Atlanta, with Joyce DeWitt of Three’s Company and Adrian Zmed of TJ Hooker. It was a salute to classic sitcoms and TV themes. Barry was quite the ham, during and after the show, during the meet and greet.

    3. I met Ann B. Davis at a bookstore in the DC area where she was signing copies of her “Brady Bunch Cookbook”; I believe this was just before “The Brady Bunch Movie” came out. Ann was also performing in “Crazy for You” at the Kennedy Center.

I met Barry Williams when he was performing in “City of Angels” at the National Theatre in Washington, DC. He autographed “Growing Up Brady” for me. I also saw him at the Brady Bunch Convention held in New Jersey in 2014.

At the Brady Bunch Convention, I also met Christopher Knight, Mike Lookinland, Susan Olsen, and Robbie Rist, as well as Sherwood Schwartz’s daughter Hope (who played Greg’s girlfriend in a few episodes) and son Lloyd, Debi Storm (who played Molly Weber; she was really nice), Geri Reishl (aka Fake Jan [from the variety show]), and cast members from “The Brady Bunch Movie” and its sequel.

  5. Thanks for another great review. I think that you meant to say that the UFO in Bobby’s dream appeared 2-dimensional, as 1-dimensional would be just a single line. It appeared very flat, though it did seem to have lights on the inside. Frank Delfino was likely most often seen in McDonald’s commercials of the 70s & 80s as the Hamburglar. “Robble, Robble!”

Has anyone else noticed the sound problems on the outdoor sets that began with this episode and continued off-and-on until the end of the series? When Peter & Bobby were in the backyard, the sound seemed to have a strange type of echo to it. This also happened noticeably in the later episode “The Hustler” on the carport set around the pool table.

I guess that Robert Reed could’ve been letting quality slip if he was tired fighting the producers by this point, but his ire blew up in a big way, as most of us probably know, in the finale, where he didn’t appear and Mike didn’t show up for his own son’s HS graduation.

    1. Per the two-dimensional spaceship, we had a similar discussion on this blog for the Jesse James dream sequence.. about how that set also seemed so simple and cartoonish and not realistic. Since this is a Bobby dream sequence from Bobby’s perspective, the spaceship prop can get away with looking two dimensional – it emphasizes to the viewer that it is indeed a dream sequence. I’m also guessing at this time when the Brady Bunch was on the verge of being cancelled that their prop budget was not the biggest.

  6. Anybody notice that Mike, Carol, and Greg are all wearing the same clothes as the night before, when the policeman was there? It looked as if they were having breakfast at this point. And when Mike told Greg he lost the. Car, and he would have to tell the fish he was grounded, that would mean going to the lake with a bull horn, saying, “Attention all fish. I am grounded this weekend.”.
When Carol suggested hitching a ride on a UFO, it seemed as if she was saying he would have to find another way to get there.

    1. Pretty sure it is the same evening and Greg is getting his lecture before they go to bed, as opposed to it being breakfast. If it was breakfast I would expect all the other kids and Alice to be somewhere around.

  7. I couldn’t believe how Peter and bobby could rat out Greg and Marcia. I mean, 15-16 year old Peter and 12-13 year old Bobby. It would make more sense if they were preschoolers. Also, remember in “The Tattletale” when Bobby refused to let Cindy borrow his skate key for ratting out Greg and Peter? Although it got him ratted out in the process. It goes to show how much less loyal the kids were to each other by the final season.

  8. I loved Sadie and Frank (Barry Williams ‘s book even had behind the scene photos of them posing with the kids).
“While this does seem like a crappy thing to do, such goings on are the nature of teenagers when some other kid is on a fool’s errand. Some heckling can be expected. Well, in today’s more socially sensitive times, this may no longer hold true, but I sure remember giving and receiving such treatment.” Glad it’s going because I always was an earnest child and it hurt to feel like the butt of the joke.

  9. -BBR, you asked if people still get autographs. I live near Hollywood so I can tell you that the big thing these days are selfies and not autographs. Autographs were far more popular before the days when everybody now carries a camera on their phones. And autographs can be faked where selfies are valid proof that the person has met the celebrity.
-Note that Peter and Bobby switched beds since the Joe Namath episode. I’m not saying this is a mistake, it’s just an observation.
-In one of the Brady books it was noted that the One Small Step speech by Frank was ad-libbed by him and of course is an obvious reference to Neil Armstrong’s famous quote as he took the first step on the moon.
-When the police dude calls his Sargent he dials only 4 numbers (where are the other 3 numbers?) and then immediately start talking without waiting for the phone to ring. Unrealistic and so common on TV. LOL.
-I felt a bit sorry for Barry Williams in this episode. He seemed to be truly in pain with his lip from his car accident. And ironically he did more activity with his lips in this episode than any other… including drinking acidic orange juice and having to blow that whistle multiple times with impacted lip!

  10. I liked this episode more as a kid than as an adult. You could tell that The Brady Bunch was really scrounging for good story lines. But I don’t think this is one of them. Personally, I believe in UFO’s, but the script and storyline just doesn’t work for Brady Bunch material. I feel like the UFO in this episode as Greg says means, “Undoubtedly Flipped Out.”

For starters, the TV station or what Peter and Bobby are doing vising astronaut James McDevitt with a talk show guest is not explained. Maybe there was a scene cut post-production, but why are they there? It’s never mentioned. Than we get to Greg’s home-made UFO, funny as a kid, but a bit immature for a late teen to be doing that.

When did Carol become an expert in photography? And why didn’t Mike help the boys develop the UFO pictures, like he helped Greg develop his football pictures and his girlfriend Lynette’s cheerleading pictures in “Click.”

I have no problem with Bobby’s UFO Dream Sequence because it was just a dream, so some credibility can be strained there. Mike calling the Air Force? And they send a near-retired policemen? If we weren’t nearing the end of the series Robert Reed certainly would have raised objections about this. He still might have, but too late to care. Reed was just waiting for the end. At least he made strong objections in “The Hair Brained Scheme.”

Peter and Bobby would be way too old for “Squealing on Greg” for getting home late Saturday night. Why would they care in the first place if Greg got home late? Bobby, you’re not a school safety monitor, anymore! LOL!

This episode is a classic case of a rushed script and a very bizarre episode. I do have to ask if anyone has actually tried to make Greg’s UFO? Did it work? I think Barry says in his book how it was done.

    1. Thanks Jack! I wondered about Carol’s photo hobby too. I had forgotten Mike helped enlarge the football pic. Maybe he knew nothing of how to do it and was just helping Greg.

I thought maybe the boys made a passing reference to Greg’s arriving home at a certain time without realizing he was home late. Greg took it as squealing when confronted by his parents.

      1. Carol seemed to take on some artistic projects through the series, including writing a book and sculpting, so it’s not really a big stretch that she would take an interest in photography as time went on.

  11. Great review! And my goodness, great comments from everyone!

I sort of remember liking this episode when it first aired, mostly because of Greg’s trick. Now, it just seems like a bad episode that does not hold up with the passage of time. So I guess you can add me to the “I liked this episode as a kid, but not, not so much” club.

    1) Lol, I like when Bobby told Gen McDivitt “Keep up the good work!”.

    2) The morning after Bobby and Peter saw the UFO, the kids are eating breakfast….Alice picks up and carries all 6 lunch bags to The Breakfast Table… That just made no sense…Can these kids not do ANYTHING for themselves?

    3) What room are they using for the darkroom when Carol develops the pictures?

    4) Greg cutting himself shaving? I’ve cut myself shaving any number of times…but never on my lip! Seems like Greg had to wear that bandage on his lip for several days…who cuts themselves like that??

    5) Great to see The Most Popular Boy, Bill E Garst returning as film editor for this episode!

    6) It made some sense to have a UFO episode, UFOs really were all the rage during the 60s and early 70s, and the crazes did last for many years. As Classic TV Lover and BBR mentioned, UFO’s Bigfoot, Loch Ness Monster, Bermuda Triangle, all were huge at that time! People were obsessed with them.

    7) Yeah, didn’t seem right that Greg was able to get that kind of a noise out of a cheap plastic whistle like that!

    8) I’m sorry, but no matter how “clear” the “plastic curtain” would have been, there’s no way it would have been that invisible, even in the dark.

    9) I thought the same thing about exposing Greg’s ruse… why does he have to explain everything to the policeman? But it WAS funny the way the Officer “posed” for two pictures while he was on the phone to headquarters lol!

    10) Since when does Greg care about fishing? They haven’t been seen fishing since the camping episode. I know he was a Frontier Scout as well, but only for one episode!

    11) Great catch by Marty McFly re: the “echo”! It was most noticeable in the Hustler episode, but we also hear it in several of the very late series episodes. Wonder how that happened?

    12) I also agree that the kids were a little old to be squealing on each other…but perhaps maybe the accidentally let something slip and Mike/Carol overheard them.

    13) Re: Autographs… yes, people did indeed have “Autograph Books” (they were sold in stores as such). My sister had one, the most famous autograph she had (by far) was from Katherine Hepburn! My Mom and Sister were at a New Jersey orchard store (sells apples, apple pies, stuff like that) one time in the early 70s, and KH happened to be there. My sister happened to have her autograph book in the car, so she ran and got it and got Ms. Hepburn’s autograph. I’m not sure if she still has it, she’s moved any number of times over the years. They said KH was very nice and signed a number of autographs.

Well, it’s all Oliver, all the time, from here on out… Oliver episodes don’t typically rank among most people’s favorites, but I, for one, am looking forward to some fun reviews!

    1. Thanks as always Tweety! Great question on Greg’s interest in fishing. Maybe he was more seeking some time away with guys his age.

That’s a neat story about your sister. I have autographed pictures of the Dukes Of Hazzard cast. They were all ordered by mail and paid for.

    2. I’m pretty sure the service porch was the darkroom, since I think they all walked out of it after the pictures were developed. My mom became a bigger fan of photography when I was in HS than she already was, taking classes at a local community college & converting our 1/2 bath into a darkroom. She borrowed an enlarger from her school and covered most of the room but the sink. She certainly had a lot of fun doing that.

  12. It looked like the pictures Bobby and Petey took were out of focus, while the ones Carol took of the fruit according to her were perfect.
If the UFO photos were as clear, one must wonder what the cop would have thought they were.

  13. Y’know, in the real world, Greg — and possibly Mike — might be charged with filing a false police report … or in the very least get a not-so-nice talking-to by the police captain for this stunt.

  14. I have to say I found this episode kind of lame. Greg’s fake UFO prank didn’t look remotely believable and I found it hard to believe that anyone would fall for it. But then again this is the Brady universe where sometimes you have to put such thoughts aside and just go with the story.

I’ve made it a point now not to read these reviews until after I’ve watched the episode just to see how many similar things you and I notice. I burst out laughing at your comment about how convoluted Greg’s plan was as that is exactly what I was thinking while watching the episode.

One part that really made me laugh in this episode is when Bobby and Peter are camping out. They’re sitting back to back at one point and when Peter gets up to talk to Cindy and Marcia poor Bobby goes toppling over to the ground. I wonder if that was part of the script or if it was a blooper that they just decided to leave in.

    1. I’m with you. This was a typical poor quality season 5 episode. There were some of the best episodes in the last season and some real klunkers. This was one of them.

  15. Here are ten things I liked about this episode:

    1. Greg builds the UFO pranking contraption using a whistle, a clear plastic curtain, a fishing line and some pulleys nailed to the window frame. That’s some serious talent!
    2. Peter and Bobby witness the UFOs, take photos of it and bring the film upstairs to develop the film via a Xerox-operated machine.
    3. Marcia being impressed by how Greg was clever enough to prank his younger brothers.
    4. The police officer doesn’t buy the veracity of the UFOs displayed in the photographs.
    5. Carol starts photography as a hobby.
    6. James McDivitt guest-starring in this episode as himself.
    7. Bobby’s dream sequences are actually pretty imaginative.
    8. James Flavin and Mario Machado do a terrific job with their respective roles in this episode.
    9. Despite Greg telling Mike in confidence after confessing that he was the mastermind behind the UFO prank, Mike still grounds him.
    10. Mike makes astute observations on the UFO photos, prompting him to call the Air Force for investigation.

    1. I agree strongly with #3 and #4! Marcia seemed to dig Greg’s pranking contraption and even got to operate the thing while Greg blew his whistle and glared his flashlight!

  16. Good to know why Greg had a bandage on his lip, the shaving comment made no sense! He could have said he hurt it while surfing, or something. If u go back and watch the breakfast scene, Greg takes a glass of orange juice ( from another child’s table setting) and brings it to his mouth, but quickly puts it down again. I think it hurt and he improvised with the director not noticing.

  17. Watched this episode for the first time last night and it was pretty good!

#1. I had to Google Jim McDivitt because I had no idea who he was. He had a pretty impressive career as an astronaut. He knew many famous astronauts like Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Thomas Stafford and Gene Cernan. It’s pretty amazing he was in charge of Apollo missions #12-16.

#2. Autographs aren’t relevant anymore. When it comes to meeting a celebrity, fans will often greet them with a handshake, a hug, a photo together or a selfie!

#3. I wouldn’t be surprised if Greg really did cut himself shaving.

#4. I didn’t get the brief subplot about Carol arranging the fruit and trying to take a picture of it. Luckily, Carol’s camera will play a part in the “UFO” plot with Peter and Bobby, since they borrow her camera to take photos of the UFO!

#5. Greg was very clever to create a UFO by using a whistle, clear plastic curtain, fishing line and pulleys nailed to the window frame! I wonder if any other families emulated Greg’s pranking contraption? Furthermore, I’m curious to know how the neighbors reacted to the UFOs. We could’ve seen the Dittmeyers go nuts over the UFOs and they could’ve played a large role in this episode!

#6. Greg told Marcia that he orchestrated the UFO prank because his brothers caught him coming home late. This reminds me of the episode “Law and Disorder”, where Bobby was doing his duty as a safety monitor and when he caught Greg coming home late, he threatened to put him on his report. I thought Bobby would’ve learned his lesson by now!

#7. The boys were pretty anxious to get the UFO photos developed!

#8. That dream sequence was kind of corny, but Bobby was always the imaginative kid. Is Kaplutus based on a real planet? Why do the aliens look like clowns? The aliens should look more like minions, but Despicable Me wouldn’t exist for another four decades!

#9. When did the Brady house have a photography lab?

#10. I loved how Greg and Marcia showed no interest in seeing the UFO pics.

#11. Mike had no reason to call the Air Force to prove if the white blobs in the images were UFOs. If he was truly convinced that those white blobs were UFOs, he should’ve called NASA, The Kennedy Space Center or Jim McDivitt! Mike should have done his research before hitting those buttons!

#12. How would a police officer have extensive knowledge about UFO sightings and whether or not they exist?

#13. It was very hilarious of that police officer requesting an image of him on the phone reporting the UFO!

#14. Greg got grounded, AGAIN! Hopefully he won’t make any loopholes or insist on using exact words and suck it up by not using his car for awhile!

    1. The Bradys improvised a photo lab on the service porch. Earlier when Greg took pictures of the football team, he was forced to move his photo lab up to his bathroom because Alice wanted his stuff off the service porch. I guess she went along w/ the idea this time.

    2. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. The Brady kids were good at staging convincing paranormal activities. Between the UFO that duped four adults, one of them a police officer, and the ghost slide in Fright Night, they had some great special effects talent.

  18. The ending was way to easy. Normally wouldn’t Mike scold Greg for pulling such a stunt? Bobby and Peter had a hard time with the school kids believing them in the first place, now they have to endure the razzing after they admit they were duped by their brother. Also Mike could be in some trouble for his role. Just seemed like the writers were phoning it in at this point. Admittedly all of our ‘end of series’ critiques are done in hindsight knowing it was ending, I think we still have valid points.

  19. I actually like this episode, it’s one of my favourites….except for the stupid UFO Bobby dream.

Speaking of Brady autographs – my brother in approx mid to late 1970s looked exactly like Barry Williams circa Season 5 – he was in the city streets of our hometown of Sydney, Australia – and a bunch of girls asked him “Are you Greg Brady?” – not wanting to disappoint, he told them he WAS indeed the actor, and proceeded to sign autographs as “Greg Brady”.

Our family all had a good laugh when he told us the story when he got home, and we all said: funny how these girls didn’t realise that “Greg” was suddenly left-handed and had an Aussie accent!

  20. Since Greg was punished from driving his car and not going to the lake. couldn’t he just bum a ride from someone else going up there? To save face that he was grounded from the car, he could have fibbed and said his car was on the fritz.

And what the heck did Greg shave his face with to warrant such a huge bandage? A cutlass?

    1. 1. About Greg’s fishing trip: I assumed this was a lie to cover up some weekend plans that he didn’t want his parents to know about! And that he asked Marcia for her Thermos just to make the lie more believable. Did she still have this Thermos from her brief stint as a Frontier Scout? When she first entered the attic bedroom with the Thermos, I assumed it was coffee to help Greg stay up late to pull his prank.

      2. I loved the cheesy craft labeled as a “U.F.O.” I’m sure that’s what they painted on it before it left its home planet! And in English, no less.

      3. What use were the Kaplutians’ space helmets, with a big square hole cut out right in front of their faces? Reminds me of the old joke “That’s about as smart as a screen door on a submarine!” By the way, thank you BBR for the fun fact that these people were the kids’ stand-ins and married in real life!

      4. I also wondered not just whether the neighbors also saw the UFO (or whether the neighbors and other Bradys saw Greg climbing all around and rigging the pulleys), but also why Mike didn’t ask whether any neighbors had also witnessed it. The stereotypical UFO sighting takes place out in the middle of nowhere, but this one was spotted in a residential neighborhood. And with a whistle to call attention to it, you’d expect more witnesses, or at least complaints about the noise.

      5. Great point about how Greg could have done more damage by letting his brothers camp out in the backyard all night for nothing. Why they would expect the UFO to return on the next night is a mystery to me.

      6. I guess they successfully got the itching powder out of the sleeping bags from Marcia’s slumber party, or just gave up and bought new sleeping bags.

      7. Nobody on this show seems to understand that people can hear you talking when you leave the window open. This applies not just to Greg and Marcia in the attic bedroom in this episode, but also in the next episode, when all 6 original Brady kids say bad things about Cousin Oliver in the family room, without realizing that he hears them through the open window and is heartbroken.

      8. The doghouse is seen in the backyard in this episode. Tiger was originally played by a trained dog, but was replaced after a tragic accident by a similar-looking dog who was not stage-trained, and was very difficult to work with. This is why Tiger is not seen after the first or second season, but because the Brady Bunch was a light-hearted show, they just left the doghouse in the backyard and let the viewers assume the family still had a dog. So if there really had been a dog, either in his doghouse or in the main house, he probably would have reacted to the whistle. For that matter, did any neighbor dogs react to the whistle?
